What’s changing

One tax return a year becomes four updates a quarter.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax means keeping digital records and sending HMRC an update every three months, plus a final declaration — instead of a single return each January.

For a lot of self-employed people that sounds like more admin, more deadlines, and unfamiliar software. It doesn’t have to be yours to worry about.

  • A named, qualified accountant handles every quarterly filing
  • We deal with the MTD software — you don’t learn a new system
  • Straight answers by phone or email, never a ticket queue

Questions

The things people ask us first

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

It’s HMRC’s move from one annual self-assessment return to keeping digital records and sending a quarterly update, followed by a final year-end declaration. It changes how and when you report — not necessarily how much tax you pay.

When does it affect me?

It’s phased in by income. Over £50,000 of self-employment or property income: from April 2026. £30,000–£50,000: from April 2027. £20,000–£30,000: from April 2028. The earlier you prepare, the smoother the switch.

Do I have to buy and learn new software?

MTD does require compatible digital record-keeping — but that’s our job, not yours. As a Xero Certified practice we put the right setup in place and run it for you, so there’s no new system for you to master.

I’ve never had an accountant. Is this overkill?

Not at all. Plenty of our clients handled their own self-assessment for years and simply don’t want to take on quarterly filing themselves. A qualified point of contact who knows your situation is exactly what MTD makes worthwhile.

You’re remote — does that work?

Yes. We work with clients right across the UK. Everything happens by call, email and secure file sharing, so where you’re based makes no difference to the service you get.

What does it cost?

It depends on your situation — income, records, and how much you’d like us to handle. Pricing is fixed and agreed up front. The free review is where we understand your needs and give you a clear, honest figure. No obligation.
